How it works

Four gentle ideas

GentleSteps opens with a short film. These are its four scenes, and the whole app is built on them.

Every bird is an individual

Budgies, cockatiels and canaries each have their own needs. Lessons point out the differences.

Watch first, then act

Learn the signs of comfort and stress, and when to stop.

Small steps build trust

Programs move at your bird's pace. Open any stage and go back whenever you like.

Keep a gentle journal

Note behaviour, appetite and new skills for each of your birds.

Inside a lesson

Calm, clear, kind

Every lesson has the same shape: a goal, why it happens, the steps, what to observe and, just as important, when to stop. Try the bookmarks.

The Calm Approach

5 min  •  Beginner  •  Building Trust
Approach your bird in a way that feels safe, slow and predictable.

Why it happens

How you approach matters more than what you do once you arrive. Fast, direct movement from above looks like a predator.

A slow, side on approach with soft talking gives your bird time to decide. Choice builds confidence.

Step by step

For all birds. Tap the bookmark to keep a step in Progress.

  1. Announce yourself with your voice before you enter the room.
  2. Walk slowly and come toward the cage at an angle, not straight on.
  3. Stop at the distance where your bird stays relaxed, and stay there for a few minutes.
  4. Keep your hands low and still, and look slightly to the side rather than staring.
  5. Over days, move a little closer only when your bird stays calm at the current distance.

What to Observe

  • Your bird keeps eating, preening or playing as you come near.
  • It turns toward you or moves closer on its own.
  • Feathers stay loose and posture soft.

When to Stop

  • Your bird moves to the far side of the cage.
  • Feathers go tight and the body leans away.
  • Flapping, hissing or alarm calls.

Species notes

Budgies

Budgies often relax faster when they hear a familiar voice or whistle as you approach.

Canaries and finches

For these birds, a calm approach for feeding and cleaning is the goal. They usually do not need or want closer handling.

Saved steps go to the Progress tab.
